Cyprian Ekwensi

About the Artist

The exquisite literary virtuoso Cyprian Odiatu Duaka Ekwensi was born on September 26, 1921, in Minna, Northern Nigeria, and eventually made his mark in Onitsha. Educated at Achimota College and Chelsea School of Pharmacy, he began as a pharmacist before evolving into a highly productive writer. His writing career started with episodic craftsmanship, creating masterpieces like 'People of the City' (1954). Ekwensi's pen became a cultural exploratory tool, revealing the complexities of pastoral Fulani life in 'Burning Grass' (1961) and reflecting the conflict of tradition and modernity in 'Jagua Nana' (1961). His varied writings continued through the decades, including 'Beautiful Feathers' (1963), 'Iska' (1966), and later works like 'Divided We Stand' (1980). Ekwensi's literary tendrils also extended to children's literature, crafting stories that sparked young minds. His contribution to broadcasting and journalism established him as a visionary who shared stories that touched his people intimately. Ekwensi passed away in 2007, but his stories remain, encapsulating the quintessential evolution of Nigerian writing. A library was established in his name at the Niger State Book Development Agency in Minna, Niger State.
